Size: 19-1/2″ long X 12″ high and about 3 wide. Date of sculpture: 2005. Flora Davis’ current style developed in 1990 while working on an independent MFA in painting. Her thesis investigated the way Buddhist teachings influenced her own artistic inspirations. In her thesis, she documented how these teachings opened a link between her mind and heart. In the late 1990s, Flora taught at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. While teaching design and color, she found a new appreciation for form, color, and texture. Currently, she works with different metals including steel, copper, brass, and aluminum. Like a zen alchemist, she works the surface of metal to create earthly and colorful patinas that are rich in color and texture. These metal surfaces are then glued onto panels or bent and shaped by hand into wall sculptures. Flora has a BFA in fine art and graphic design from San Diego State University. She also studied at The School of Visual Arts in New York. Flora’s work is in many private and public collections, and she has exhibited in numerous galleries and competitions. This past fall, 25of her pieces were in a one-person show at Ligne Roset, San Francisco. In 2010, she was one of 20 artists chosen for ArtSpan’s biennial juried exhibition “Selections”. In the spring of 2009, Flora was selected to spend two weeks at the Morris Graves Foundation art residency as a solo artist. Her work has been included in four volumes of Studio Visit Magazine, in the American Art Collector and Catamaran Literary Reader. Flora has been an ArtSpan Open Studios artists for over 25 years and in 2015 was an Open Studios committee member. She also belongs to Cultural Space Coalition and Cultural Action Network, two organizations that are advocating for affordable studio space during San Francisco’s current Tech Gold Rush.
