Original TREE OF LIFE Folk Art Metal Sculpture Signed JHONSON AUGUSTIN Haiti. 17 square, a hair larger on some sides as this is hand cut. This is a WALL SCULPTURE, it is 2-dimensional and meant to be hung on a wall or propped on a shelf, etc. Antiqued finish on a hand cut piece of steel drum. Traditionally a 55 gallon oil drum is used and is hand cut, finished, shaped, punched, and embossed by the Artist. This type of artwork is very well known in Haiti. This particular piece is special because it has actually been worked from both sides- metal punched from the back to bring relief areas up on the front side, as well as embossed with a metal tool to add line details into the front. Jhonson Augustin is a world-renowned Haitian metalwork artist whose best known pieces are his Tree Of Life sculptures. This piece has 8 beautiful birds perched in the leaves. Signed by artist on front at base of tree. Edges are slightly smoothed so that this piece is not’razor sharp’. It is of course metal with edges, but not like a knife. This piece was not made with a hanging hook because there are multiple openings in the metal that a wall nail would easily fit through. Very collectible and unique. Excellent vintage condition, PRISTINE no damage to metal – no scratches, chips, nicks, fading, or discoloration. The piece is meant to be primitive in style and intentionally has some differences in finish & slight wear to highlight its uniqueness. See all pics and use zoom.
